Therapy for Relationship Patterns & Attachment

Do you find yourself repeating the same dynamics in relationships, even when you understand them intellectually and want something different?

Maybe you become anxious when someone feels distant, have difficulty trusting, struggle to express what you need, or find yourself over-accommodating to keep the peace. You may notice that certain relationships bring up strong fears of rejection, abandonment, conflict, or not being enough.

Sometimes the pattern is the opposite: pulling away when closeness feels uncomfortable, shutting down during conflict, or keeping important parts of yourself at a distance.

These patterns can be frustrating, especially when they seem to show up across different relationships.

You may notice:

  • Repeating similar relationship dynamics

  • Worry about rejection or abandonment

  • Difficulty trusting or feeling secure with others

  • Overthinking texts, conversations, or changes in someone’s tone

  • Trouble expressing needs directly

  • People pleasing or over-accommodating in relationships

  • Fear of conflict or disappointing others

  • Pulling away when relationships feel too close

  • Feeling responsible for keeping relationships stable

  • Losing touch with your own needs in close relationships

Understanding attachment and relationship patterns

The ways we relate to others are shaped over time. Early relationships, family dynamics, past experiences, and important losses can all influence what feels safe or threatening in connection with other people.

Attachment can be a useful framework for understanding these patterns, but I do not see people as fixed “attachment types.” Most of us develop different strategies for staying connected, protecting ourselves, or managing vulnerability depending on the relationship and situation.

In therapy, we can look at these patterns with curiosity rather than judgment and begin to understand what they are trying to protect you from.

Our work may include helping you:

  • Recognize relationship patterns as they happen

  • Understand where those patterns developed

  • Identify the fears or beliefs underneath them

  • Express needs more directly

  • Set clearer boundaries

  • Tolerate conflict and uncertainty with more confidence

  • Develop a stronger sense of yourself within relationships

  • Build relationships that feel more mutual, secure, and authentic

The goal is not to eliminate vulnerability or make relationships feel completely predictable. It is to create more flexibility and choice in how you respond when old patterns get activated.

Moving Forward

You do not have to keep repeating the same relationship dynamics.  Therapy can help you better understand the patterns you have developed, strengthen your connection to your own needs, and create new ways of relating to others that feel more secure and aligned with who you are.

If this resonates, I’d be glad to talk with you about whether working together might be a good fit.
